My Eyes Are Watching God

Nirvana to me: I'm looking for it, and my search has led me to my 10-day fast and prayer. I really don't see many sacrificial acts of devotion being practiced in my religion, but here I am, alarm set at 5:15 for my meal before sun-up.

Modeled after Ramadan, I am hoping to engage in intense spiritual rejuvenation as well as emerge with an open spirit about the places faith will lead me.

I have so much to pray for, and I think God chose this time for me to reflect and wait as He confirms a path for my life.

I love the way He loves me, and I love that who I am doesn't have to be who I will be forever.

Matthew 6: 16-18 on Fasting:
16"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

    Question:

    Jesus talks in this collection of verses about how our fasting should be only for God in order to draw nearer to him and come humbly before him in private -- not to draw attention to ourselves or to publicize it. Wouldn't you consider posting your intention to fast on a blog and on facebook makes it "obvious to men that you are fasting?"

    I would encourage you to listen to this series or just study more in scripture about the nature and purpose of fasting to glorify God (http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/Sermons/BySeries/5/). Fasting is such a wonderful way to draw near to him, but it is important to always remember that He and not ourselves, should be the focus. I only say this because I have made this mistake as well and it has only hindered my experience with the Lord through fasting. I hope this is helpful and beneficial. I think it's wonderful that you are drawing near to the Lord through fasting! I hope that the Holy Spirit opens your eyes to new revelations and truths about our loving God!

    The acts of my fast are private, I just told people so they know what I'm up to and they can support me and lift me in their prayers.
